A beautiful photoshoot doesn’t start with a camera. It starts with conversation and relationship. Whether you're a photographer reading this to get ideas to prep clients, or you're a newly engaged couple (congratulations!) trying to think through your engagement shoot - setting aside time to think and talk about what's important will bring everyone to picture day with peace of mind.
Here are the questions I use to facilitate conversations when prepping for engagement sessions, but the conversation is always steered by what's important to the couple! ⬇️

Most things in life are moments of pleasure and a lifetime of embarrassment; photography is a moment of embarrassment and a lifetime of pleasure.

Getting to Know You
- How did you meet?
- What are three words you would use to describe your relationship? Playful. Steady. Adventurous. Tender. These words help guide everything from posing to editing tone.
Your Photoshoot Vision
Every couple has a different feel in mind.
- What emotions are you looking for? Romantic? Playful? Elegant? Adventurous? Cozy? Editorial? Naming the feeling helps align expectations and ensures your gallery reflects your personality.
- Do you have a location or two in mind? Some couples know exactly where they want to shoot. Others want guidance. Both are great. I can suggest beaches, urban settings, fields, or more intimate spaces depending on your vision. (Even an In-N-Out photo session has been considered!)
- Is there a song that’s special to you? Sometimes I’ll have couples play “their song” and just dance for a few minutes. Those unposed moments often become the most meaningful images.
- Do you have specific poses or inspiration you love? Send them over. I welcome inspiration photos.
Wardrobe & Styling Details
- Hair & Makeup: Are you doing professional hair and/or makeup? Do you prefer matte, bold, natural, or no makeup at all? There’s no right answer — the goal is that you feel like yourself. Professional makeup artists can also give a natural look.
- Beach Sessions Tip: If we’re shooting at the beach: skip the shoes and minimize what you carry.
- Talk through accessories & props: Flowers, a sentimental heirloom, a cozy blanket — small, meaningful details can add depth without overwhelming the frame.
- One often-overlooked detail: Plan for a few close-ups of your hands. Engagement rings, intertwined fingers, subtle touches — these images become favorites.
Logistics & Must-Haves
- I send a detailed email the week of your session with parking instructions, meeting spots, and timing. That way, you can focus on showing up relaxed.
- Must-haves: Are there any specific poses or moments you absolutely want captured? Tell me ahead of time so I can prioritize them.
- Dates - depending on your hair and makeup needs, and timeline, we'll get you booked! Generally: single location sessions have a 2-3 week turnaround, two locations will have samples delivered in the first week, and a full gallery in 30 days.
And finally, and most important to me:
WHat other questions do you have?
Your comfort matters. No question is too small.
